The Department of Health and Human Services proposes to change the definition of "abortion" to include many kinds of birth control, including the freakin' Pill.

Many kinds of birth control function by making it impossible for a fertilized egg to implant. The HHS did a poll and discovered that 49% of Americans believe that life begins at conception, so although the American Medical Association and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists tell us that pregnancy begins at implantation, the HHS wants to let 49% of random Americans tell us that it really starts the minute the sperm hits the egg.

49% of random Americans are CLEARLY in a better position to make this kind of decision than the American Medical Association and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

So, you know, condoms? The birth control that women have to ask their male partners use? That kind of birth control is fine. But the kind that women control for ourselves, that's abortion.

My god, I hate people.

LJ user zarq has some handy links for ways to help prevent this proposal from going forward:

Tell HHS what you think. (Limited to 160 characters.)
Or, use Planned Parenthood's Online Form
Contact your Senator
Contact your House Representative

This is what I wrote to my senators and representatives:

The Bush administration is proposing a set of rule changes at the US Department of Health and Human Services, which would redefine "abortion" to include many types of birth control.

This is an egregious example of our current administration's inability to separate the tenets of their own faith from the governing of our country. I strongly urge you to do all in your power to ensure that this proposal is defeated, and to protect the reproductive rights of women in this country.

Earth Day

Although it won't be by the time I post this - I don't have internet access in my room this week.

So last year I made an Earth Day resolution to start using cloth bags instead of plastic ones. It's gone reasonably well - I'd say I cut my usage of plastic bags by at least 50%, and I'm going to try to cut that even further this year. Sometimes I forget to take them with me.

My new resolution this year is to start using energy-saving lightbulbs. It will take a while to get to it, because I have a small stockpile of regular bulbs to go through first.

Hi everyone! I just want to take a moment to talk about the Writers Guild strike, and why I feel so strongly about it. As you've probably figured out by reading my blog over the years, I am a giant TV and movie fan. Nothing pleases me more than watching a new episode of a favorite show, or seeing a fantastic film.* And I'll admit, my first thought when I heard that there might be a work stoppage was "What about my favorite tv show, Supernatural? I must have it, I must!"

But after reading about the earnest negotiations attempted by the WGA as they tried to reach a fair contract, and how rigidly the studios rejected any sort of compromise, I have to say, the writers have my full support. Their demands are not unreasonable. These are not people who are making a ton of money being greedy and wanting a big chunk of the pie. In my opinion, they are asking for a fair percentage of the profit made from the use of the works they helped to create, in a way that represents the changing face of broadcast television's new media outlets.

I plan to show my support by doing the following:

  • As long as the strike runs, I will not watch any reality TV show or any show that attempts to air solely unscripted material, excepting news programs which are not covered by the Guild. Several studio heads have been quoted as saying they aren't worried about shutting down their scripted programs because they can just air more reality tv.

  • As long as the strike continues, I will not watch any streaming videos of scripted shows on the internet. I will not download episodes from iTunes or Amazon, or any other subscriber service. The writers get no compensation for the use of their material in this manner.

  • As long as new scripted shows air, I will watch them. The writers get paid for these broadcasts. Click here to see how many episodes you can expect of your fave shows.

  • As long as the strike continues, I will not purchase any DVDs.

I'm posting this to ask you to consider doing the same. I'm not trying to pressure anyone, and I know some of you probably couldn't care less about this situation - it's by no means the most dire thing going on in the world right now - but it's something that I feel strongly about, and I wanted to share that with you. If you do feel the same, I also urge you to share this information with your friends, on- and off-line.

*Well, okay, there might be a couple of things that please me more, but I'm trying to stay on topic here.

[livejournal.com profile] zillah975 has said this way more eloquently than I ever could, but seriously, how apathetic is our country? What do they have to take away from us to get a reaction? Because right now, the country that's meant to stand for freedom and liberty seems hellbent on taking both away from as many people as possible, and I wish I knew what I could do that would stop it.

Vote-USA.org seems to be a good site to find out who's on your ballot this fall. They had a great idea for comparing the candidate's positions, but at least for my district, no one seems to have replied. Also, it only lists the candidates, so now I'm trying to find out what issues are on the ballot this time around. Anyone know a good source?

Well, I did the volunteer gig tonight. It was good, and I got to watch the show for free, which was... interesting :) Parts of it were very funny, parts of it were "OMG they didn't just say that!"

But twas good. I worked concessions. I folded programs. I cleaned up after the audience of seven people. The people who work there were very nice, all quite funny which makes sense as most of what they do there is improv. All in all, a good night out.

My thoughts and prayers to everyone seeking shelter in New Orleans tonight. God bless you and be with you.

Ok, this is an interesting approach. If you go here, you can send a question to 7 women senators that you would like to have asked during the Supreme Court confirmation hearings.

In case anyone hasn't joined moveon... here's a link to send a note to your senators if you oppose the nomination of Judge Roberts for the Supreme Court.

http://political.moveon.org/roberts

I'm not naive enough to hope for a liberal appointment, but if we could just not put someone up there who's after Roe v Wade, I'd be satisfied. I'd hate to be right about both things I thought would happen if Bush was elected.

Apparently the early bird does get the worm, or the worm gets off the hook or some other form of incredibly mixed metaphor.

I got up at god-awful-o'clock, dressed my self in business casual, and trucked off to find the free Juror parking lot (which, for those curious Atlantans, is the Orange lot at Turner field). I only got lost once, which is hilarious considering that Turner field is in fact 2 minutes from my house. One short trip through downtown later, I was back in the right spot to hop on the bus (and y'all know I just *love* buses) to the courthouse. I got off, spotted another girl clutching a blue summons paper and went to make friends - figured if I gotta spend a day in a room full of strangers, I might as well enjoy myself. We trucked up to the jury room only to discover...

The first 50 jurors to arrive got the choice to leave if they wanted! It doesn't count as service, but my name won't come up in the pool again any faster so I got the hell out of dodge. *ponders the delicious irony of getting a 'get out of jail free' card for jury service*

I took the elevator back down with the girl I'd walked in with and we chatted a bit about our good fortune and then parted ways at the parking lot.

Then I went home, got out of my car and there she was. She lives in my building - we so could have carpooled. But hey, at least I know one of my neighbors by name now - after 3 years! :)

Looks like I've got jury duty tomorrow. I'm actually semi-excited about it, I've never been summoned (summonsed?) before.

Hi!

My friend Gina ([livejournal.com profile] namaste_atlanta) is participating in the 2005 Atlanta 3-Day Walk for Breast Cancer.

If you or someone you love has breasts, and you'd like to help her raise some money for a cure, please click here to donate.

Seriously, it's a great cause, and I'm so proud of her for doing this!

ETA: Just FYI, the cure of which I am speaking would be for breast cancer, not the actual act of having breasts. Oops.

The following was completely copied and pasted from [livejournal.com profile] and_chocolate's LJ:

"I believe that the president's leadership in the actions taken in Iraq demonstrate an incompetence in terms of knowledge, judgment and experience in making the decisions that would have been necessary to truly accomplish the mission without the deaths to our troops and the cost to our taxpayers."
--House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi

One of the Emperor's particularly nasty minions, the House Majority leader [Tom DeLay], responded:

"Nancy Pelosi should apologize for her irresponsible, dangerous rhetoric. She apparently is so caught up in partisan hatred for President Bush that her words are putting American lives at risk."

(Source: CNN)

That's right, folks, it's now official: criticize our so-called President and you are endangering American lives.

But a better president than Dubya said this:

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." - Theodore Roosevelt (1918)

I suggest the following meme: Everyone who is so inclined, write down that Roosevelt quote on a postcard and send it to the dear House Majority Leader at either of the following addresses:

The Hon. Tom DeLay
242 Cannon HOB
Washington, DC 20515

The Hon. Tom DeLay
Office of the House Majority Leader
H-107 The Capitol
Washington, DC 20515

Then post this info in your journal and see if we can generate a big, fat reminder that dissent and criticism are not treason.

Pride 2003

Now that I have both a blog and a LJ, I can't decide what to post where. So I am doing double postings until I figure it out. Hope it's not too annoying to the two people who read both :)

I spent the weekend doing mostly Pride-related things with my roommate, some of which I enjoyed, others not so much. One of the things I did notice was that there was (as would be expected) two political aspects to the weekend: 1) a celebration of the recent Supreme Court ruling and 2) a few signs supporting upcoming presidential candidates.

These two things kept eating at my conscience all weekend and I think I've finally figured out why. The ruling bothers me because while everyone else has focused on the fact that the ruling is in favor of human rights, I seem to be focused on the fact that 3 out of the 9 people who shape the force of the law of the land believe they have the right to control what goes on in the bedroom of two consenting adults. I just don't understand what would make anyone think they had that right. I have to admit I don't understand the legal purpose of sodomy laws in the first place. I don't see that it does anything other than attempt to legislate the morality of one section of society over that of the other sections.

The second issue bothered me because of the lack of presence. The next election is a little over a year away, and I just can't explain how important I feel it will be. I have been trying to do a little research on this, and have received some information from an organization called MoveOn, about candidates they are considering endorsing. So I thought I'd share:
Ambassador Carol Moseley Braun
Governor Howard Dean
Senator John Edwards
Congressman Dick Gephardt
Senator Bob Graham
Senator John Kerry
Congressman Dennis Kucinich
Senator Joe Lieberman
Reverend Al Sharpton

I don't care who you vote for, I am not endorsing any of these people, and I have no idea who I'm going to vote for. But I really want to be educated this time around.
