LJ etiquette question

What is the proper way to go about adding someone to your friends list?

I don't mean how, exactly. I mean if I follow a link and end up reading someone's stuff that I enjoy and want to keep up with, it is it proper just to add them or should I ask first?

I would think just add them....this is a public forum (unless you choose to have your posts private or for friends only,which I think you would only see their posts if they have you listed as a friend)...
So, yea...did that make any sense?

I think most people just add them. That's what I do. I have had a few people ask me though. The confusion comes with the fact that it's called a 'friends' list I suppose. I don't really think you necessarily have to be friends with someone to find their journal interesting and want to read it.
