Okay, so as I was driving home today, I got this brilliant idea to do a Valentine's song share - I've been meaning to share some music in thanks for all the lovely stuff people put up for me. However, what started out as a small playlist turned into a two-disc compilation set, complete with commentary. I hope you enjoy these songs - and if you can't be with the one you love... well, you get the idea.

Let me know if the links die, I'll re-do them.

Fuck You-Ani DiFranco
"Fuck you, for existing in the first place" - A sweet song about loving someone you can't have.

Strange & Beautiful (I'll Put A Spell On You)-Aqualung
"I've been watching your world from afar, I've been trying to be where you are." - Ah, creepy love!

If She Knew What She Wants - The Bangles
"I'd say her values are corrupted but she's open to change" Classic confused love!

Porcelain - Better Than Ezra
"I wish I could kill you and savor the sight" - Love you don't understand is still love.

Please Don't Tell Her - Big Head Todd and the Monsters
"Always leave her waiting, always leave her down, if she should come my way, I always turn around." - Seriously, I think this is how men look at love sometimes.

Nervous Heart - The Borrowers
"But ooo, she can do what she wants with mine, she's as sweet as turpentine!" - This song always makes me feel hopeful about love, that there's always someone who is looking for you, you know?

Lover I Don't Have To Love - Bright Eyes
The title sort of speaks for itself, now doesn't it? This was the first Bright Eyes song I ever heard (thanks, [livejournal.com profile] mcee!) and while I like the rest of their stuff, I love this song!

It Was - Chely Wright
Stick with me. Yes, it's country music. I actually could have put a dozen country songs on here, because two things country music does well - love and heartbreak - but I limited myself to two. Okay, three but the third one almost doesn't count. Anyway the lyrics - "It was real, it was magic, it was calm, it was savage, it was cool as a breeze, it was warm to the touch, it was never enough, it was always too much, it did all the things love does, and that's how I knew it was." - Because, dammit, just because it didn't work out doesn't make it less.

Always Got Tonight - Chris Isaak
"Take it easy, tell him that you'll telephone, if you love me then it isn't really wrong." - A song about ex-sex, what's not to love?

Carriage - Counting Crows
"So we slide inside of someone's mouth and someone's eyes until there's a sound of something intimate exploding." - Okay, the Counting Crows are my favorite band and have been for a decade now. This song in particular is slow and sad, and has a great horn solo.

Cool As Kim Deal - The Dandy Warhols
"I'd rather be cool than be loved."- Hell, who doesn't want (or want to be) a girl as cool as Kim Deal!

As Lovers Go - Dashboard Confessional
"I swear that you've got me all wrong, all wrong, but you've got me." - This song always makes me want to smile and twirl around.

What Sarah Said - Death Cab For Cutie
"Amongst the vending machines and year-old magazines in a place where we only say goodbye." - If you haven't bought this album, you really should. It's fantastic, start to finish.

Celebrity Sanctum - Dogs Die in Hot Cars
"I love Lucy! I love Lucy Liu. Yes, I love her twice as much as you." - Obsessive fan love, come on! :)

You're the One - Dwight Yoakum
I don't care if you don't like country music - Dwight Yoakum is AWESOME! "You say he's gone, and you're alone, well that's a shame. If you think real hard, I'm sure you'll see just who's to blame." This is what we refer to as a 'fuck you and the horse you rode in on' song.

Better Together - Jack Johnson
"Love is the answer, at least for most of the questions in my heart." - Sweet, mellow every day love. This is what I'm looking for.

Love Song For A Savior - Jars of Clay
"An open field of wildflowers, she breathes the air and flies away - she thanks her Jesus for the daises and the roses..." - There are a million flavors of love, y'all. Okay, saying that you want to fall in love with Jesus is perhaps crossing a line - there must be a word for having romantic love for a deity... theophilia? - but hey. Jesus loves you! Now go watch Saved! (Seriously, watch it. It's hilarious.)

Why Don't We Get Drunk - Jimmy Buffett
I'm going to hell for putting this after the religious song, aren't I? :) This song just encapsulates Valentine's Day, doesn't it? Or is it just me?

Hurt - Johnny Cash
Does it still count as country if it's a remake of a Nine-Inch Nails song? Destructive love, omg. "You could have it all, my empire of dirt. I will let you down, I will make you hurt."

Everyday I Love You Less And Less - Kaiser Chiefs
"Everyday I love you less and less. I can't believe once you and me did sex. It makes me sick to think of you undressed. Since everyday I love you less and less." - *giggles* I can't resist a song with a na-na-na.

I Want You to Want Me - Letters to Cleo
"Feeling all alone without a friend you know you feel like dyin'. Didn't I, didn't I, didn't I see you cryin'?" - Nothing like just putting it out there - love me, dammit!

(I Need) A Little Bit More (Than You Can Give Me) - Luxembourg
In honor of (and thanks to) [livejournal.com profile] sparktastic, who put this song up for dl. I love it! Any song that can use the words 'microscopic shred of honesty' wins in my book. And I so have to pick this CD up somehow when I come over. "I guess that when I told you I would leave you if you cheated, you took it as a promise, not a threat. But now we're really here I don't feel like making your life that easy, I feel like making it hard on you."

If We Kissed - Meredith Brooks
"Room is spinning, out of control, act like you didn't notice, brush my hand." - Because the fantasy is usually better than the real thing :) And this song is just sexy to me.

Vice - Razorlight
"If it's L-O-V-E, I'll see you later." Valentine's Day wouldn't be complete without a little commitment-phobia!

I Eat Dinner (When The Hunger's Gone) - Rufus Wainwright Feat. Dido
"No more candlelight, no more romance, no more small talk, when the hunger stops." If you've broken up with someone, nothing like a song that will make you want to kill yourself from the loneliness.

Independent Love Song - Scarlet
"I'll show you how to take me (Go down, go down, go down), and I'll show you how to love me (right on, right on, right on)and I'll show you how to touch me." - Another twirling song. What?! I like to twirl.

Caring Is Creepy - The Shins
"It's a luscious mix of words and tricks, that let us bet when you know we should fold." I also like creepy love.

Ten Storey Love Song - The Stone Roses
"When your heart is black and broken, and you need a helping hand. When you're so much in love you don't know just how much you can stand. When your questions go unanswered and the silence is killing you, take my hand, baby, I'm your man, I got lovin' enough for two." - The Ultimate Twirly Song! Sirsly, I'ma play this at my wedding. Assuming I ever get married.

She Cries Your Name - Strange Cargo
"She cries your name, three times again, she cries your name. How long can this love remain?" - Because everyone has a friend that's in love with a complete asshole.

Ever Fallen in Love - Thea Gilmore
A remake of The Buzzcocks, but much slower tempo than the original. I love the internet, and how it opens us up to new music. This was a recommendation from Neil Gaiman on his blog, and then Scott and I went to see her live and she's wonderful. "You disturb my natural emotions; you make me feel like dirt and I’m hurt. And if I start a commotion, I’ll only end up losing you and that’s worse."

Thanks for the music, Beth! I'm still trying to replinish my collection after Chris and I broke up. Most of the music was his, so now I just need to get me an ipod and I'll be all set.

Props to you for including Better Than Ezra and Dwight Yoakum in the same post. (Dude, Dwight, you CANNOT be that big a dick and wear a hat like that, man.) Thanks for the awesome music...god, Ani DiFranco is such a fantastic, amazing woman.

I'd like to add two - on the down side: I Hate Myself for Loving You by Joan Jett. On the up side, Broken Arrow, by Robbie Robertson (covered by Rod Stewart).

Robbie released his own version on his own CD and it's very good, a little rougher than Rod's but very moving, IMHO
