Pride 2003

Now that I have both a blog and a LJ, I can't decide what to post where. So I am doing double postings until I figure it out. Hope it's not too annoying to the two people who read both :)

I spent the weekend doing mostly Pride-related things with my roommate, some of which I enjoyed, others not so much. One of the things I did notice was that there was (as would be expected) two political aspects to the weekend: 1) a celebration of the recent Supreme Court ruling and 2) a few signs supporting upcoming presidential candidates.

These two things kept eating at my conscience all weekend and I think I've finally figured out why. The ruling bothers me because while everyone else has focused on the fact that the ruling is in favor of human rights, I seem to be focused on the fact that 3 out of the 9 people who shape the force of the law of the land believe they have the right to control what goes on in the bedroom of two consenting adults. I just don't understand what would make anyone think they had that right. I have to admit I don't understand the legal purpose of sodomy laws in the first place. I don't see that it does anything other than attempt to legislate the morality of one section of society over that of the other sections.

The second issue bothered me because of the lack of presence. The next election is a little over a year away, and I just can't explain how important I feel it will be. I have been trying to do a little research on this, and have received some information from an organization called MoveOn, about candidates they are considering endorsing. So I thought I'd share:
Ambassador Carol Moseley Braun
Governor Howard Dean
Senator John Edwards
Congressman Dick Gephardt
Senator Bob Graham
Senator John Kerry
Congressman Dennis Kucinich
Senator Joe Lieberman
Reverend Al Sharpton

I don't care who you vote for, I am not endorsing any of these people, and I have no idea who I'm going to vote for. But I really want to be educated this time around.
