I got into my first Facebook fight, y'all!

One of the people who went to my uber-conservative Christian college responded to my link to a call to action from Planned Parenthood with a remark about "moral tragedy" so I responded back. Then I went to his profile, because he is one of the few people I have friended that I honestly don't know. So I looked at his profile, and at the Catholic pro-life ad and that he has Sarah Palin under his Pages, and I thought, "Why do I want to pretend like I remember this person?"

So I unfriended him. Maybe it's childish, but I don't really care. This morning he sent me an email saying that I was narrowing my world view by staying away from people who disagree with me. I probably should have just ignored it, but I sent him one back telling him the truth: I don't remember him, and I don't feel we have anything in common, and if that narrows my world, so be it.

Now, I'm going back to playing Scrabble.

You did all right by unfriending him, and also by answering him your reasons. They are very reasonable.

I've been accused of narrowing my world view before. I asked that person if she flushed the toilet, since to me it seems like the same thing...

All sounds fair enough to me! I rarely friend people first on Facebook, but there are a couple of people who I think 'well I know who you are but why the hell did you friend me??' At least one person I'm fairly sure I've never spoken to in my life.

I felt kind of attacked, by the way he said it. Or maybe just where he said it. Facebook isn't like that to me. I just put a link to the call for action in my profile, and that's like... that's my area. I get to say what I believe there, and if someone doesn't like it, they should just scroll past it. That's what I did when all the people I went to college with put up their pro-McCain stuff during the election.

I know! I wish there was a way to friend someone, but completely filter them out. So that they'd never know you didn't want anything to do with them.

This is part of the reason why I don't have a Facebook. But honestly, I don't see any reason why you should need to be "friends" with a person with whom you have no common interests or activities, simply because you have some common background or past. That's not the basis for a friendship, real or virtual, and it's up to you to determine whose input you value.
